MBW Utility Tools
MBW are one of the worlds leading manufacturers of utility tools, the
range includes..Airammers, Ergo-Tampers and the infamous Soil Pick, for more information see
below.
Soil Pick
The Soil
Pick is a selective excavator. Selective in the sense that it fractures, pulverizes and
displaces porous and semi-porous soils, yet leaves nonporous objects unaffected. The Soil Pick excavates soil
without risk of damaging buried utilities.
The Soil Pick employs converging/diverging nozzle technology to
accelerate compressed air to supersonic speed (to 1500 mph). The high velocity air stream travels approximately 4
inches from the distal end of the Soil Pick - "the cutting edge" - before decompressing to atmospheric pressure
with sufficient violence to pulverize and displace soil.
What separates the MBW Soil Pick from other excavation tools
employing converging/diverging nozzle technology?
Safety. MBW holds US and international patents on the combination
of dielectric and non-sparking characteristics embodied in the Soil Pick. Non-conductive, non-sparking tools are of
obvious benefit to those working in environments that may be gas enriched and/or are in close proximity to live
electric lines.
Also for reasons of safety, MBW standardizes the Soil Pick's
cutting edge at between 4 and 8 inches. A 4" to 8" cutting edge is long enough to facilitate rapid excavation, yet
short enough to minimize the potential for personal injury caused by misdirection of the cutting edge. The operator
is also better able to control the air stream when excavating in the immediate area of a gas leak.
The Soil Pick's non-sparking, brass nozzle weighs 4.2 ounces. It
is important that the nozzle does not detach from the barrel to become a high velocity projectile. For this reason,
the nozzle is threaded into the Soil Pick's barrel and cemented in place with Hydraulic Loctite.
The Soil Pick requires no periodic maintenance. A pressure gauge
on the handle assembly advises the operator if the tool is working at acceptable pressure. The Soil Pick weighs
3kg, has zero hand/arm vibration and can be used for extended periods without fatigue.
Radial Trenching is a fast growing technique used by the Arboreal
industry. Used to safely remove and replace compacted soil that literally suffocates tree roots, the Soil Pick has
become a standard in the Arboreal market. Decompact today or decompose tomorrow.
The Soil Pick is ex-stock from our yard, ready for next day delivery.

Ergo-Tamp
Pole tampers or "pogo sticks" are an everyday tool
of the trade for utility field operations. Pole tampers are small, effective soil compactors, appropriate for
use in highly confined areas and capable of achieving geo-technical goals over a wide range of backfill
soils. Unfortunately, pole tampers expose field personnel to one of the industry's highest levels of hand/arm
vibration. Never-the-less, pole tampers have proven difficult to replace. Indeed, as a growing number of
utilities adopt "keyhole methods", it is likely that pole tamper utilization will increase as excavation size
decreases.
MBW's Ergo-Tamp is a
pneumatic pole tamper specifically designed to minimize hand/arm vibration. A patent pending vibration suppressor
located at the hand-held end of the tool reduces hand/arm vibration between 50 and 70%, depending on conditions of
compaction. Excessive hand/arm vibration is known to contribute to the development of various chronic ailments
including carpal tunnel syndrome, white finger and arthritis.
Additionally, the Ergo-Tamp can be equipped with a trigger
guard. The trigger guard is a safety feature designed to minimize accidental activation of the compaction
shoe.

Airammer
The Airammer is a pneumatically powered rammer. It eliminates a long list of engine related problems. There are
no fuel or fuel mixing issues, no carburetor, no spark plug, no exhaust ports or muffler to foul with carbon, no
rewind starter, no flooding problems, no air or fuel filters that can be plugged, no rpm issues, all of which
affect performance.
The Airammer also offers the following advantages:
- It's the safest rammer made. A deadman handle stops all ramming action instantly whenever the operator
releases his grip on the guiding handle
- Very low hand/arm vibration, lower than any engine powered rammer
- No sparks
- Is the quietest rammer in the market place
- The lack of exhaust fumes in bell holes and trenches is a health and safety issue for operations
The Airammer isn't the right machine for every application, but it's perfect for crews with ready access to an
air compressor.
